My regular readers know that I love books. I think we have more books then our local library. LOL! I especially get a kick out of children’s books that are not only entertaining but also educational, but not in an obvious way.
Even though my children are older now I still adore children’s books and have a nice collection to read with my grandchildren some day (a long time from now! LOL) as well as my little nephew and a family friend. I think quality time spent with a child reading together is priceless. Some of my most favorite memories are those where I snuggled up with my kids and we read books together.
One of the most important jobs of a book is to show children the wonder of words.
There is a new book out that combines the talent of a legend in the art world with a literary giant. Together they created a completely unique, totally original word book that is smart, funny and visually remarkable.
The book is titled 13 Wordsand it was written by the international bestselling author Lemony Snicket. The artwork for the book is by acclaimed artist Maira Kalman.
Like many word books, 13 Words will introduce young readers to words like bird, cake, and dog. Unlikeother word books, Lemony Snicket and Maira Kalman add their unique brand of whimsy and humor, so young readers will also discover words like haberdashery, panache, and Mezzo-Soprano. Seriously, how many adults know what haberdashery means? I happen to know because my Mom and grandparents used to use that word. A haberdashery is a store or department that sells sewing products, ribbons, buttons and notions. Clearly this is not a common word found in children’s books. To me that is what makes this book truly unique and unlike anything else currently available.
Mr. Snicket weaves thirteen distinctive words into a strange and wonderful story, and the way in which this story blossoms into an entire quirky world in the hands of Ms. Kalman makes for quite a wild and memorable ride.
Critically acclaimed, Booklist’s enthusiastic review states that 13 Words “encourages participation on the part of both the readers and listeners to connect languages with images” and Publisher’s Weekly gave 13 Wordsa starred review, commenting that Maira’s illustrations are “gorgeous” and the her “Matisse-like, gelato-colored spreads drip in mystery.”
13 Words is a terrific and wholly original gift this holiday season. Here is a trailer for the book.
Mr. Snicket’s trademark wit complements Maira’s lush, whimsical illustrations to create a video that will illicit a belly laugh, or two, for both adult and child. It’s a funny video. You should really check it out. Mr. Snicket would be a lot of fun to have at a holiday party! LOL! I love how he goes off on a tangent about cakes and hats.
This looks like a fun book and I cannot wait to review it. Lemony Snicket books are not only entertaining but his words of wisdom are very entertaining.
To learn more about the “unique” world of Lemony Snicket please visit www.LemonySnicket.com. Even his website is entertaining.
Maira Kalman is a “rock star” in the art world. Known for her whimsical and vibrant graphic style, Maira’s artwork has been featured in many children’s books as well as graced the cover of many issues of New York Magazine. Her work is also part of a permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
You can see some of Maira’s beautiful artwork here, http://www.JacksonFineArt.com/Maira-Kalman.html. Maira’s official website is www.MairaKalman.com.
13 Words is available where ever books are sold. Its geared more towards children ages 4-8 however I’m sure adults will appreciate the artwork from Maira Kalman and the entertaining way Lemoney Snicket writes.
I have a very special giveaway associated with this book for a very lucky She Scribes reader. The winner will receive the following…
– A copy of 13 Words (of course! You know you want to read it).
– 13 buttons featuring the 13 words and accompanying illustrations from the book. This fun set can be used to decorate a diaper bag or backpack.
– A limited edition (only 15 made), original Maira Kalman piece of artwork. This signed, 5 1/2″ x 7 1/2″ piece is gauche on paper. The estimated value of the artwork is $750.00!
I am not sure of the retail value of the buttons but I know they can sell upwards of $1.00 each or more on some sites. The book is valued at $16.99. That means the entire retail package of this prize is approximately $780.00 if you add everything up.
To enter please comment on your favorite word. Is there a single word that you just think is fun to say? For me that word is Serendipity. There is just something very whimsical about that word that makes it fun to say.
For extra entries you can do any or all of the following. Please be sure to leave a separate comment for each that you have done. Extra entries are optional.

My favorite word is : Doe Doe.
I call my horse Doe Doe alot (his name is Wiatt). Reminds me of that Doe Doe bird on a Cartoon that is well…..not the sharpest tool in the shed…..My horse is smart, but sometimes what he thinks is being a smarty pants is in reality, being a pain in my rear. Especially when it comes to vet bills.

This would be a wonderful heirloom to pass down to the book lovers in my family.
One of my favorite words to say is ‘Exactly’. It’s funny because I had been thinking about the word recently when I noticed that all the members of my family have a peculiar way of slowly speaking through our teeth on this word. We are all from the south with THICK accents…but on this one word, we suddenly sound like we are what I can only imagine very uptight people in the Hamptons sound like…then we are right back to the thick accents. In fact, this is the first place I have even mentioned this to anyone.

Your fave word is Serendipity. Did you know that Saran Wrap was named after that word? I volunteered at a Cleveland Hospital and the Volunteer director knew the man that made the wrap and coined the phrase.
My favorite word is Perseverate.
That means going on and on and on and on about a certain subject. It turned into my favorite word when my middle school daughter was told she wasn’t using it correctly. She protested (she is a word guru!) and the teacher looked it up and realized she was indeed using it correctly. I think she was telling a student to quit perseverating on something.
