I consider myself a somewhat decent cook. I also enjoy trying out new recipes with my family.
This past weekend I was at my cousin’s 50th surprise birthday party. While at the party my husband and I enjoyed a delicious cucumber salad that my cousin had prepared. It was made with cucumbers, dill, vinegar, onions and Feta cheese. I fell in love with it (I couldn’t get enough of it). I had to Google the recipe when I got home so that I can make it for my family.
The recipe involves cutting cucumbers and onions. I am not a big fan of cutting up vegetables and fruits. We have super sharp knives and I always worry that I am going to slice off part of my finger or give myself a deep gash. I have done it before, so I know how painful it can be. For that reason I tend to be reluctant to cut things up.
I have watched plenty of online videos on how to properly cut things and where to place your fingers when you are cutting, but I still have a fear of cutting myself.
Not long ago I was sent a nifty product to review that helps ease the fears associated with cutting foods. It’s called the Chef’s Thumb. Chef’s Thumb makes food prep safer and easier.
As you would expect by the name the product the Chef’s Thumb has to do with your thumb. Think of it as a little “coat of armor” for your thumb to protect it from getting cut or scraped.
Chef’s Thumb slips over your thumb to help you grip and stabilize the cutting surface, ensuring safe and secure cutting, while protecting the thumb from the knife.
Because people’s thumbs are different sizes and thicknesses, Chef’s Thumb provides multiple inserts to ensure that your thumb fits snugly and securely into the thumb protector.
Set up is super easy. Simply select the insert that works best for you, snap the protector in place and you are ready to go.
It does take a little getting used to. Once you get used to the feel of the Chef’s Thumb you don’t even notice that you are wearing it.
It does offer peace of mind, or at least to me, that I am not going to cut or knick my thumb while cutting cucumbers, onions, peppers, carrots or even apples (the things I seem to cut the most). My husband can use it too without changing the insert. It would be a wee bit more comfortable for him if he made it fit his thumb better, but for the short amount of time he uses it he doesn’t mind.
In addition to protecting your thumb the Chef’s Thumb has “teeth” on the underside of it that are used to grip the product you are cutting it and preventing it from sliding around the cutting board.
I’m sure many people can relate to trying to slice something slipperly, like a peeled potato. It’s hard to keep it still so you can slice thing slices. With Chef’s Thumb you can grab on to the potato with the “teeth” allowing you to make the slices you want.
Chef’s Thumbs also comes with an optional peeler that you can use. The attachment allows you to peel the skin off things like cucumbers or carrots. It works the same way as a regular peeler the only difference is that the peeler works off your thumb, not a separate device.
I have used the peeler a few times but so far I am not used to it yet. It feels weird to me to peel with my thumb. I’m used to using an actual peeler. I’m not saying that it doesn’t work (it does!), it’s just that it’s different and I’m not used to it – yet.
Chef’s Thumb is made from a high-quality stainless steel and a strong polycarbonate, with a triple bonded Titanium T3™ blade that is razor sharp and will never rust.

I think this is a great product. Every kitchen should have one whether you are a gourmet chef or an ordinary cook like me.
Chef’s Thumb sells for only $14.95 ($5.99 S/H) and comes with a 30 day money back guarantee.

This would make a great gift for a foodie, newlyweds or someone starting out on their own.
For the record, I was going to take photos on my own but it’s not easy to cut and take photos at the same time.

Wow!! A peeler on your thumb thats very different. Would love to try it.
I have had many, too many, near misses with my thumb over the years. I have never required stitches, but I have cut off a fingernail or two. *sigh* I am wondering how it feels not to “feel” anything with that thumb. At any rate, it is a really nifty gadget and one I will keep in mind for the future.
This is a fantastic idea, I have a fear of cutting my thumb when I slice things, I definitely need this. Thanks for sharing this.
What a genius idea! Now I need one for my birthday.:)
I need one of these! They would make nice gifts for friends too
