When I was a young girl in school, I honestly don’t recall anyone having a peanut allergy. In fact, I used to bring peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to lunch pretty much every day. My mom used to also pack me school snacks such as saltines with peanut butter, graham crackers with peanut butter and those orange (cheese?) crackers with peanut butter on them.
These days most schools are nut free and don’t allow anything with peanuts/nuts in them. The school I work in even has special tables for children with nut allergies.
I am responsible for purchasing and serving snacks to the children in my program. Even though we don’t have any nut allergies (thankfully), we are still a nut free program.
About two years ago I was looking for some snack alternatives for my “work kids.” I happened to see a jar of SunButter on the shelf near the peanut butter and jelly/jam spreads. SunButter is made out of roasted sunflower seeds (grown here in the United States).
I was interested in this product right away, not just because it wasn’t made with peanuts, but more so because I love sunflower seeds. They are a favorite snack of mine.
The brand makes certain to ensure the safety of their product, and avoid any cross-contamination, by using a dedicated facility to process the sunflower seed butter. Its production facility is free from all top food allergens (peanuts, tree nuts, soy, dairy, eggs, wheat, fish, and crustacean shellfish). The entire process, from receiving sunflower kernels to packaging delicious sunflower seed butter, all occurs under one roof. Every pound of SunButter is proudly made in Fargo, North Dakota.
The first time I tried SunButter I was surprised at how much it looked like peanut butter. The only difference I noticed is that it tends to be a bit more oily, but that is easily remedied by stirring the contents of the jar before using. Once you stir it up it totally resembles regular peanut butter. If you have ever had natural peanut butter, it’s identical to that.
I was SHOCKED when I first tasted SunButter – it tastes just like peanut butter! I’m not just saying that either. I personally could not tell the difference.
I purchased another job to try out with my “work kids.” They love crackers and graham crackers, as well as rice cakes. I thought SunButter would make a great spread.
Initially I was a bit worried the kids might not like it, but to my surprise, several of the children had already had SunButter. They even told the kids that were a bit skeptical of it that it tasted just like peanut butter.
Fast forward two years, I buy SunButter every month for my “work kids” to go with graham crackers, rice cakes and other crackers. They love it. Some prefer that I spread it on top for them and others rather have a dollop of it on their plate so they can dip the food into it.
SunButter is available in different varieties – all made with 100% roasted sunflower seeds.
The brand sells…
- Creamy
- Chunky
- Organic
- Natural
- No Sugar Added
- Chocolate
The brand even has on-the-go cups (great for work and school lunches). I received the brand’s chocolate SunButter on-the-go cups. I didn’t know the brand had chocolate SunButter. It’s SO GOOD! I have been using it on rice cakes. Admittedly I had one “as it” (straight out of the cup).
I need to pick up a jar of the chocolate SunButter for my “work kids.” I think they will go crazy for it. It’s not often I can serve chocolate things, because chocolate it not always good for you.
Something I am looking forward to trying out, Jammies. Jammies are pre-made sandwiches made with SunButter and either grape or strawberry jam. I’ve been on the look out for them at my local grocery stores, but I haven’t seen them as of yet. If you like Uncrustables, these are similar but made with SunButter.
SunButter is high in protein and has less sugar than similar products. Parents can feel good knowing they are serving their child a wholesome, nutritious, healthy treat.
If you love to bake and/or cook, you can make A LOT of delicious recipes with SunButter. If you visit the SunButter official website, SunButter.com, you can find a plethora of mouth-watering recipes.
There is a recipe for Chocolate SunButter Eggs I am thinking of making for my “work kids” for Easter this year.
You can purchase SunButter directly online, however it’s also available at many retailers across the country such as Target, Amazon, Shop Rite, Walmart and many other locations.
SunButter is similar in price to peanut butter too.
